Adam Heyns is a South African documentary filmmaker, cinematographer, editor and creative producer based in Cape Town.

His work is rooted in character-driven storytelling, with a particular interest in memory, place, heritage and the quiet emotional lives of people and communities. He works across documentary film, factual television, cultural projects and commissioned work for institutions, often bringing a cinematic and observational approach to stories that sit between the personal and the historical.

Adam began making films as a teenager, directing and producing a television show while still at school. He later completed a BA in Philosophy and Literature at the University of Pretoria before turning an early obsession with visual storytelling into a professional career across film, television and documentary media.

His work has taken him across Southern Africa, South America, the Indian Ocean and beyond, often in field-based environments where travel, research and human encounter shape the final story. His credits include broadcast work for kykNET, Showmax and SABC, and he has collaborated with cultural institutions, NGOs and social impact organisations including the French Institute of South Africa, AFD and Hope for the Blind.

Adam's short documentary Exorcist of Apartheid won Best Short Documentary at the 2019 Jozi Film Festival. He has also worked on long-running beloved television series including Voetspore, and continues to develop personal documentary projects alongside commissioned films, photography and archival work.

Across his practice, Adam is drawn to stories that reveal how life can be beautiful, fragile and worth remembering. Whether directing a personal film, editing a documentary, photographing a place or shaping a commissioned story, his approach is attentive, curious and grounded in the belief that memories are worth capturing, questioning and preserving.
